She’s So Twentieth Century

A little something for all you modern lovers out there tonight. They say Valentine’s Day is all made up. Well, what’s not made up I ask you? Columbus Day? I say it’s the one holiday, regardless of religion or race, we can all get behind. Valentine’s is for two kinds of people: The LOVERS and the LONELYHEARTS. Brothers and sisters, we’re both. So, see it’s our day and there ain’t no rules save one: If you’re a LOVER don’t forget about it, even if yer pardner says to do just that. Especially, if yer pardner says to do that. Now, if you’re a LONELYHEART don’t worry about it, just don’t be a creep.

For inspiration or for tonic, The Real Mr. Heartache, is spinning old Valentines records tonight beginning at 11 PM (lover’s time) and ending at 1 AM (lonelyheart’s time) over on your favorite community radio station, KBCS. Now, hold on a second don’t pull on your boots so much as lace them up. Country weepers for two hours would put me in my cups and I’d be a mess on air, crying about old girlfriends, dead pets, the state of the union, incandescent bulbs, and guaranteeing myself a night on the couch.

To avoid all suchness I’m filling in for the Great Duffy Graham on his punker show Away From the Numbers. It’s my favorite show away from home and I’m pleased to be sliding into the host chair for the fourth time. I’ll be shooting flaming arrows out into the night sky aimed straight at your heart from the New York Dolls, Stiff Little Fingers, Patti Smith, The Dictators, Kirsty MacColl, The Phenomenauts, The Ramones, Visqueen, The Supersuckers and Elvis. More of course, but you’ll just have to tune it.

My own best girl usually gets a rendition of (You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care which I think is sweeter than she does, but she knows it’s for her so that buys me some latitude. The song was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who, as if I have to tell you, wrote Hound Dog, Yakety Yak, Poison Ivy and Charlie Brown. That’s just the tip of the tip, too. Baby I Don’t Care came about when music publisher, Jean Aberbach, had been after the two to write songs for an upcoming Elvis picture. He showed up at their New York hotel pushed a couch in front of the door, laid down on it and said, as he was drifting to sleep, no one was leaving until he had his songs. Over the next five hours, with a sleeping man sprawled out on a nearby couch, Leiber and Stoller wrote (You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care,  Treat Me Nice, I Want To Be Free, and Jailhouse Rock. They don’t make ’em like that anymore.

That’s Elvis on the bass by the way.

Leiber & Stoller

But, tonight isn’t that kind of show. So, what to play for her, this old fashioned girl of mine, that has that Leiber and Stoller feel, has that same… je ne sais quoi?

She’s just so twentieth century

Whether you have a sweetheart to squeeze or not, don’t forget, The Real Mr. Heartache loves you. Happy Valentine’s Day.
