The Giants Win the Pennant

Bobby Thomson - October 25, 1923 – August 16, 2010

“I have never known a greater moment of pure joy.” – Stephen Jay Gould

“No day in my life since has brought me the pain of that day.” – Larry King

A moment in time to judge all other moments in time. On October 3rd, 1951 at 3:58pm, Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca throws a ball to the Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson. One pitch, up and in. Not a great pitch. Not a hitter’s pitch, but Thomson swung and drove that ball hard into the lower deck of the left field stands and everyone who was there that day, everyone who heard Russ Hodges call that day over the radio, can tell you exactly where they were. A shot heard ’round the world.
