When it comes to those relentlessly touring road acts, the bands that seem to never stop, there’s the tier that I’ve grown tired of, or at least disinterested enough to not bother with anymore. Then there’s the bands that I’ll trundle out to see wherever they are playing no matter how many times they come through town. Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Rosie Flores, Robbie Fulks, and one of my all-time favorite live bands, The Gourds.
The Gourds are back at the Tractor Tavern this coming Tuesday which is sure to be a hot, sweaty mess of a show, filled with good drink, good people, and good music. Last year’s album, “Haymaker”, was one of my favorites of ’09 and still gets a pretty regular spin on the big show when I need to kick it up a bit.
Over the years The Gourds have remained unapologetically hillbilly. They were one of my favorite on air interviews too, largely for the same reasons I love them live. Their energy is huge, their turns unpredictable.
For Tuesday, I’d recommend taking your sweetheart to get some barbecue, then rolling out into our very own Texas heat, and shaking yourselves to one of our great Texas bands. Get on now.
